TV Council

Under Act No. 483/1991 Coll., on Czech Television, as amended, the Czech Television Council is the body through which the public exercises its right to oversee the activities of Czech Television.

The Council has eighteen members, who are elected and removed by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate in such a way that significant regional, political, social, and cultural viewpoints are represented.

What is Czech Television Council

Pursuant to Act No. 483/1991 Coll., on Czech Television, as amended, the Czech Television Council is the body through which the public exercises its right to oversee the activities of Czech Television.

The Council’s powers include: appointing and dismissing the Director General and, upon his or her proposal, the Director of Czech Television’s television studios; approving the budget and final accounts of Czech Television and monitoring the implementation of its budget; approving the Statute of Czech Television upon the proposal of the Director General; submitting the Code of Czech Television to the Chamber of Deputies for approval; approving the Director General’s proposals for the establishment or closure of television studios (Section 9(8)), deciding on complaints concerning the Director General, supervising the fulfillment of public service obligations in the field of television broadcasting (Sections 2 and 3) and the implementation of the principles set forth in the Czech Television Code, approve long-term plans for programming, technical, and economic development, establish a supervisory committee (Section 8a), and determine the Director General’s salary. The Czech Television Council grants the Director General of Czech Television consent to dispose of, encumber, or lease real estate for a period longer than three months. The Czech Television Council also oversees the activities of Czech Television in connection with its legal succession to Czechoslovak Television regarding copyrights to works and rights related to copyright. The Czech Television Council submits an annual report on the activities and financial management of Czech Television to the Chamber of Deputies (to which it is accountable for its activities). The Council operates on its own budget; the costs of the Council’s operations and the remuneration of its members, as well as the costs of the Supervisory Commission’s operations and the remuneration of its members, are covered by a separate budget line item of Czech Television.
