People (and Trivia) from the Making
of Divided We Fall
In addition to the proven team of Jan
Hrebejk and Petr
Jarchovsky, a number of top creative personalities participated
in making the film: JAN
MALIR stood behind the camera (Cosy Dens, Ruffiano
and Sweeteeth, Big Beat, Tank Battalion, etc.), the art
director was MILAN BYCEK (Victims and Murderers, Out
of the City, Cosy Dens, The Life and Extraordinary Adventures
of Private Ivan Conkin, etc.), and costumes were designed
by KATARINA HOLLA (Landscape, Cosy Dens, The Wonderful
Years that Sucked, Kolya, etc.). Her costumes impressively evoked
the era of the Second World War, and art director Milan Bycek
underscored her achievement with his scenery and period props.
The film's music was selected and/or composed by musician and musicologist
Ales Brezina, director
of the Bohuslav Martinu Foundation Study Center. He and Jan Hrebejk worked
together as students of Prague's Film Academy (FAMU) on two film projects:
Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Sex but Were Afraid to
Experience and the successful Bachelors. He also worked on
the music for Petr Zelenka's film The Buttoners.

For the new film, Brezina composed an original film score,
and rounded it off with archive music from Germany. "The
most horrible musical kitsch and banal melodies of the
period are used in the film, as well as great classical
works, gems of German music. For me, Second World War
is one of the biggest of paradoxes, with its clash, within
one nation, between the highest culture and the cruelest
barbarism. This is the element that interests me,"
adds the musician; he also helped out during shooting
by translating German dialogue.
