Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška

Fotograf, žurnalista, biolog a prezident Wildlife Connection Eduardo Lugo je autorem prokazatelně nejrozsáhlejšího archivu fotografií mořských savců v Mexiku. Mořská bioložka a vedoucí projektu Wildlife Connection Maria Eugenia Rodriguez právě dokončila magisterská studia.

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr.

Joseph: „please, could u explain, what we still dont know about humpbacks. Are there any mysteries...Thanx a lot for the report“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „We know very little about their mating and reproduction in general and also about their social structure. What you have to understand is that whales being marine mammals spend a lot of time underwater. That, together with their migratory habits makes long-term observation very challenging. Thanks to continuing efforts in their study however, we hope to contribute to cracking some of the mysteries.“

black: „For how many years is the Splash Project determinated? Who finance it (for the Commision)? Thanks and all the best“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „The SPLASH project has already concluded (2004 - 2006). Every independent research team (like us) that participated in the study had to find its own sources of financing. SPLASH however did pay for every photo a team sent to its database. Academic institutions participating in the program received a more substantial financial support, which was used for the vessels, gasoline and man- power needed during their expeditions and consequent data processing.“

cestovatel: „Existují biologické projekty také v Kostarice a dalších zemích této oblasti? Děkuji.“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „Kostarika byla jednou z velmi dulezitych zemi v ramci projektu SPLASH. Keporkaci, kteri v Kostarice zimuji patri ke stejne populaci jako velryby, ktere navstevuji zatoku Banderas.“

Shakira: „Good evening Maria and Eduardohave do you have any pet?“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „Yes, we have 3 cats in our house and 80 dolphin friends in the bay waters :)“

Eva: „Are the whales you are studying curious about you? Do the humpbacks have any measurable intelligence? Do you have the feeling they are observing you, too?“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „Humpback whales are certainly very curious animals. They quite frequently peek out of the water to check on the people inside the boat. Sometimes they even play with the boat. They often lie on their backs under the boat and observe and follow it. We even had several whales during the years of our study, lie on their back directly below the boat, rise their 5 meters long pectoral fins and hug the boat!“

Soňa: „Hi. Do you have any other interesting results from FLASH (apart from finding new journeys of humpbacks)?“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „SPLASH showed that the population of humbacks in Northern Pacific is rising. The main migration routes have been confirmed, but the data also suggests existence of yet unknown wintering grounds. These are the main results of the project so far.“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „V soucasne dobe zadni keporkaci v zatoce Banderas nejsou. Ocekavame prvni z nich behem listopadu. Tech 20 tisic keporkaku, ktere SPLASH ve svych vysledcich uvadi, patri k populaci Severniho Pacifiku. Presny celosvetovy odhad zatim neexistuje.

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „Prace podobneho druhu se dnes provadi prostrednictvim cipu GPS. Zrovna minulou sezonu jsme meli moznost pozorovat u nas v zatoce Banderas jednu velrybu, ktera cestovala az z Oregonu ve spojenych statech s GPS cipem. Cela jeji trasa byla takto dokumentovana a my jsme jeji pritomnost zde potvrdili i porizenim nekolika fotografii jeji ocasni ploutve.“

Gabriella: „Hello, nice to meet zou Maria and Eduardo...i am really interested in keporkacs and dolphins,i wanted to study about them, but i am afraid it is no chance here in CZ.Can you recommend me any school in europe?Where did you study?I am sorry for mistakes...=o) wish u the best G.“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „To study marine mammals in the heart of Europe is certainly a challenge. You would have best chances in countries that do have oceans. Prominent marine-mammal studying countries are Spain and England in Europe, also Australia, USA and of course Mexico. I (Maru) studied at the University of Guadalajara and in the Ensenada Research Center CICESE in Baja California.“

Jan Kočárník, Brno: „do you planning some other research on Humpback whales in Mexico. I dont know exactly what kind of research it could be , but anyway..what your new plans in case of humpback.“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „The photo identification projects are an on-going effort. As old animals die and new are born, we need to keep a track of all of them as closely as possible. Then we use these data to for example establish whether there are any long-lasting bonds in betweed adult animals. The preliminary results indicate that there might well be, something that has never been described before. There is simply a lot that needs to be studied further.“

ghostbusters00@seznam.cz: „Mám několik fotografií ocasních ploutví keporkaků z Dominikánské republiky, chcete je?“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr.

Anička: „How big is the biggest whale? How far can they travel? Can they swim around the whole Earth?“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „The biggest whale is the Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus). It reaches lengths of up to 30 meters and weights of up to 150 tons. It is also the largest animal that ever lived on the planet Earth. Here in Mexico we can find populations of these whales in the Sea of Cortez in the Gulf of California.“

Díky a fandím PORTu“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr.

Petr Parler: „How you think we here in the heart of europe can help to protect whales?“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „In the globalized world we should be aware of what is happening around the planet. You can read on internet about the whales and conservation programs that help protecting them. You can try to participate in those that employ volunteers and you can always at least sign an online petition urging Japanese government to stop hunting whales. The most important part is to know what is happening and know what is right and what is wrong.“

Zdenek: „Good evening (or good morning in case of Mexico)! Can you identify whole families of whales living together for years? Did you for example uncover any adopted baby whale?“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „This is precisely the questions we still have about the social structure of the humpback whales. We continue studying them to find out the answers. So far, there are only hypothesis, but thanks to programs like SPLASH and thanks to efforts of many researchers we are confident we will keep on finding out more and more about these great animals. As for adopted babies, we are not aware of any such case.“

Michal Dočekal, Budějovice: „do u have any ..story with humpback whale...anything what surprised you...“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „One sad surprise was to see a humpback whale that was lacking its tail completely - it simply had just a stump in place where its beautiful large tail was supposed to be. We are almost certain that its tail must have been aputated slowly due to entanglement in a large fishing net.“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr.

Iveta Hořejší, Plzeň: „do you have the same whales every year in the bay? Do you know them?“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „Yes, our identification project is precisely about this. We know that the same animals come to the bay on regular basis. So far we have identified individually around 600 animals.“

Vaclav Kočí, Praha: „Why you like exactly the whales? What is fascinating on them..in your opinion .thank you . vaclav“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „Seeing an animal twice the size of your boat and observe the power they have, which can clearly be appreciated during their fights is just amazing. So much force and yet so very gentle. We have never had a single animal threaten the boat. We know they could cut the boat in half with one stroke of their fluke, yet they do not. Also their songs, being so complex and beautiful are just beyond words. We also enjoy observing our clients get so excited and awed by seing the animals in their natural environment.“

Martin Novák, Ivančice: „thanx a lot for this report!! Martin“

Eduardo Lugo, Maria Eugenia Rodriguez a Mgr. Petr Myška: „Dekujeme i vsem divakum Portu a reziserovi/ kameramanovi Petrovi Tomaidesovi, ktereho vsichni z Mexika zdravime. Maru Vazquez, Eduardo Lugo a Petr Myska Bahia de Banderas, Mexiko“
