MUSIC WITHOUT LIMITS

Hudba bez hranic

The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester has established in 1986 of Claudio Abbado, who is its music director these days. His reason had been that he wanted to support the coming together of young Austrian musicians with their young colleagues of Czechoslovakia and Hungary Historically this bas the first international orchestra of young musicians that bas able to choose its members in the countries of the former Eastern Block, and its activities helped to overcome the barriers set up by the Iron Curtain. Since 1992 the orchestra has become accessible to musicians up to the age of 26 from the whole of Europe. Every year auditions take place in over 25 towns of Europe, in front of a jury authorized by Claudia Abbado and they make their selections from the many applicants. Every year, before the Easter tour and the summer tour, a chosen conductor gets together in the orchestra’s bases, the town of Vienna, Bolzano, Lucerne and Paris. Their repertoire when on tour spans everything between classicism and contemporary music, with special emphasis on the great symphonies of the romantic period – this being the outcome of the large group of 86 strings. The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchestra has built up its high artistic standard and international acclaim in collaboration with numerous outstanding conductors and soloists: Serge Baudo, Pierre Boulez, Semjon By4kov, Riccardo Chailly, Bernard Haitink, sir Neville Marriner, Kenta Nagano and others. We now find many former members of this youth orchestra playing in the large orchestras of Europe – like the Vienna Philharmonics, The Vienna Symphonic Orchestra, The Berlin Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle of Dresden, the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig or the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam. This year the Gustav Mahler Hugenndorchestra played in Prague at the Smetana Hall under the baton of Anton Reck, and they presented compositions by Gustav Mahler, Alexander Skrjabin, Richard Wagner and Bela Bartok.
