A telling portrait of Siberia, unveiling a life the average mortal is unlikely to see: shabby towns and destitute villages in which the nouveau riche flaunt Japanese automobiles; the indifference and apathy of the people; their loss of ideology; their despair. These regions have seen a better past, one belonging to the original cultures which dwelt in a land of immense natural resources. Nowdestroyed by the uncaring Communist regime. The film-makers have made use of unique archive material, as well as of the reminiscences of Hanzelka and Zikmund, celebrated Czech travellers who undertook a tour of Siberia some forty years ago. l.
