THE SAUDEK BROTHERS

Bratři Saudkové

Petr Kankas film about Jan and Karel Saudek is a story about twins whose father Gustav Saudek was of the Jewish faith. The familys fate during the war and afterwards was typical for all the mixed marriages of the times. The two brothers had wide experience with racial hatred and that may have been the reason why they grew up into such rebellious personalities. Kaja Saudek became famous in the 1960s with his comics, drawings that played an important role also in the popular film comedies of the day. Jan Saudek the photographer, who was a factory worker for a long time, waited for success until his work was first appreciated abroad, where his photographs hang in prestigious art galleries and where they also sell well. Kaja settled down in the course of time and leads a family life; Jan never gave up his own lifestyle and relationships, some of which ended dramatically. The Saudek brothers frank and open attitude give the viewer the chance to reflect on art and generally human connections through the intense situations the filmmakers presented in their documentary.
