Sylvia, the protagonist of the story, marries Hynek, a young doctor. He is an only child, and at the age of thirty five still mummy’s darling, tied to her by a strong emotional bond. Alžběta (Elisabeth), as Hynek’s mother is called, has chained him to herself by pathological parental love, and it is unthinkable for her that she should share her son with his wife. At the same time, she starts realizing that once Hynek gets married, he will move out and she will remain alone. Therefore she tries to thwart the young couple’s wedding plans, using all means fair and foul. And when she fails, she tries to wreck their marriage, never tiring of seeking pretexts for causing a conflict with Sylvia. Following several abortive attempts, she succeeds at last in bringing about the breakdown of the marriage - through Valerie, a domestic help, whom she plants in the newly-weds’ household. Valerie quickly installs herself and starts pursuing her own interests. The complaisant Hynek soon finds himself in the role of table-tennis ball. His mother has opened a shrewd game – which is however gradually slipping from her control. In the end, it’s her who pays the highest price for her own scheming.
