The story of an ordinary Czech family from the year 1964 on, where two college students met, fell in love, begat a baby and were married. From there on the family saga unravels down the years, creating a captivating mosaic of human fates and relationships through three generations. All that against the back-ground of the times and their landmark events like the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw-pact armies in 1968 and the “normalization” period that followed, the “velvet” revolution, the privatization process, but also the details of daily life that characterized the times. The queues to buy TV sets, the first automatic washing machines, the police permits to travel abroad and bank quotas for that purpose, the Tuzex shops. Emphasis does not lie on politics, the authors did not want to evaluate the historical events, but show as faithfully as possible how ordinary people lived day by day under the given conditions.
