The love story of a Czech intellectual girl and a Slovak from a patriarchal gentleman-farmers family, set in the 1920s.Jana Myslbekova and Thomas Barany meet while studying at Pragues Charles University. They fall in love right away and decide to get married. Unfortunately Thomas proves to be incapable of shouldering the responsibilities brought about by marriage in this complicated social situation. Even though their love never quite deserts them, the relationship breaks up and ends tragically. However, the story is actually that of an eternal triangle, because Jana and Stefan, Thomass widowed father, become very close through the family troubles. During Thomass lifetime they never exchange a single word or gesture about how indispensable they are for each other. Some time after Thomas committed suicide they decide to walk through life side by side.
