This black-and-white film, set in the Bohemian Forest just before the outbreak of WWI, tells a story of human searching and hope. A young doctor arrives from Vienna to begin practicing medicine. The villagers are a varied lot: there is the work-worn window and her restless son; the postman who lives with her; lovely Anna, the object of men from far and wide; and the priest who sees everything but doesn't interfere. This village microcosm breeds animosities and minor cruelties, but most of the inhabitants are busy enough with their own lives: they arrive from somewhere only to stumble away somewhere else, but the human urge to 'move on' merely seems to pull people from their proper paths.
