BOHUSLAV MARTINŮ GALA CONCERT

Bohuslav Martinů Gala

The gala concert held in remembrance of the 50 years since Bohuslav Martinů’s death presents the composer’s work spanning 43 years, and also aims at being a reminder of the link between today’s State Opera Company Prague and the history of the opera building. A special item on the programme is the world premiere of Martinů’s Nocturn No. 1 in F minor for large orchestra, composed in his native town of Polička in 1915. He composed music from the age of 13, without hoping that his pieces would ever be published. The manuscripts of some of these early works are preserved and deposited at the Bohuslav Martinů Center in Polička. Among them was the six-page score of the Nocturn, which cannot deny the influence of young Martinů’s love of Claude Debussy. This is one of his most interesting early compositions.
