The central theme of this remarkable documentary programme, shot in the Transcarpathian region, are the folk traditions, cultivated at the local schools, the work of professional and amateur song ensembles, as well as the production of present-day composers, and the intertwining of a variety of influences and genres. Transcarpathian folk songs represent an extraordinarily interesting component in the European context. The combined effect of many different influences on the relatively small territory of Transcarpathia lends the folk songs of the region an unusual diversity, resulting in a wonderful blend of the spiritual wealth with the highly original “mundane” culture.
