POHLED Z ANGLIE: Posily Slavie se teprve zabydlují. Sešívané táhnou starousedlíci ve formě

Bezbranková remíza Slavie proti APOELu ukončila aspirace sešívaných na Ligu mistrů. Poté, co úřadující český mistr prohrál v prvním zápase na Kypru 0:2, měl před sebou příliš těžkou úlohu, přestože jej dopředu hnal devatenáctitisícový stadion.

Jestli vyhlídky na postup nebyly růžové, ještě více zčernaly před výkopem. Milan Škoda, který figuroval v základní sestavě, musel zápas vynechat kvůli nemoci. Slavia, jež potřebovala vyhrát o tři góly, tak musela bojovat beze svého kapitána a nejlepšího střelce posledních třech sezon.

V této chvíli potenciální krize se Jaroslav Šilhavý rozhodl dát důvěru Micku van Burenovi, a ne Murisi Mešanovičovi, první přirozené náhradě za Škodu. Okolo šesté hodiny v sobotu večer bylo jasné, že tahle volba se osvědčila.

Van Buren a Slavia nenašli cestu přes APOEL. Ale v úvodní hodině Nizozemec splatil důvěru svého trenéra. Bývalý útočník Esbjergu a Excelsioru roztahoval kyperskou defenzivu do šířky, bil se s obránci soupeře a přesprintoval je, přičemž se dostal do řady dobrých příležitostí. Sice neskóroval, ale zdálo se, že góly přijdou brzy.

Tah Van Burenem

Proti Mladé Boleslavi se Van Buren prosadil dvakrát a byl mužem zápasu. Už podruhé za týden činila jeho kombinace přímočarosti, síly a inteligence ve hře bez míče soupeřům problémy.

První gól byla šikovná hlavička z ostrého úhlu, druhá branka zase podobně obratné zakončení pravou nohou. Oba góly přitom nebyly jen výsledkem Van Burenovy chytrosti ve vápně, ale také hezké kombinace po slávistické levé straně. Poprvé v sezoně úřadující mistr vypadal jako tým, který by opravdu znovu mohl obhájit titul.

Hodně toho bylo řečeno a napsáno (jak v češtině, tak v angličtině) o letošních slávistických ambicích. Velké posily ještě nezaujaly, alespoň ne natolik konzistentně, jak se čekalo. Ale s tím, jak se Danny a Ruslan Rotaň s každým zápasem více dostávají do svých rolí a jsou sehranější, vypadají, že by se mohli dostat do skvělé formy.

Ale zatím jsou to ti, kteří jsou ve sešívaném dresu už nějakou dobu, kteří zatím podávají nejlepší výkony.

Hušbauer se zatáhl ještě hlouběji než v minulých letech

Vedle Van Burenovy zarputilosti na hrotu by se chvála měla prokázat také Josefu Hušbauerovi a Janu Bořilovi, kteří byli v zápase s Mladou Boleslaví stejně úderní a jsou zřejmě slávisty v největší formě.

Hušbauerův talent je dobře známý dlouhodobým divákům českého fotbalu, ale zdá se, že v této sezoně se zatáhl ještě hlouběji do pole než dříve. A vypadá to, že si užívá zodpovědnost špílmachra spíše než dřívější roli "box-to-box" dynama ve středu pole.

A pak je tady Bořil, jehož pozice v týmu jako by byla neustále v ohrožení. Ale současný levý obránce pokaždé setřásl konkurenci a vrací se silnější. Pokud nebudeme počítat Davida Limberského, je těžké momentálně najít lepšího hráče na jeho postu.

Jenže je tady také otázka, která zůstává nezodpovězena: Dokáže Slavia skloubit domácí ambice s cílem dojít daleko v Evropské lize? Kádr je na to dostatečně široký, ale začátek sezony naznačuje, že cesta v obou soutěžích možná bude trnitá.

Ale to, co se stalo během kvalifikace Ligy mistrů a následujících roztříštěných výkonů proti Baníku a Bohemians, může být zanecháno historii. Další tři zápasy nám ukážou, jak se Slavia popasuje s obávaným cyklem čtvrtek–neděle. Po reprezentační přestávce Slavia cestuje do Olomouce, která jen těsně podlehla Plzni před dvěma týdny, a pak v Edenu přivítá Maccabi Tel Aviv a Spartu.

Je už teď brzy označit tyto tři zápasy za utkání, která se musejí vyhrát?

Pomalý start signalizuje problémy pro Spartu

V motoristickém sportu existuje rčení, že závod nemůžete vyhrát v prvním rohu, ale můžete ho tam prohrát. A po sobotní porážce na půdě Zbrojovky se lidé začínají ptát, zdali sparťanské ambice na titul už nejsou pryč.

Ano, ligová sezona je stará pouhých pět kol, jenže zatímco Slavia a vedoucí tým ligy Plzeň dolují výsledky a vykazují známky zlepšení, Sparta zůstává na mrtvém bodě.

Ať už necháme prohru v Brně stranou, s tím, jak pokračují spekulace v tisku o příchodech a odchodech před koncem přestupového okna, je těžké říct, jak se může klub rychle stabilizovat za pár týdnů do derby proti Slavii. Pokud se výsledky a výkony nezlepší do poloviny září, letenský klub může být odstřižen mimo boj o titul.

Los Evropské ligy: Příznivý, i když ne atraktivní

Všem třem českým klubům v Evropské lize los v Monaku přisoudil do základní skupiny relativně příznivé soupeře. Plzeň i Slavia by měly být se svými skupinami spokojeny a přes pár těžkých zápasů by oba týmy měly mít dobrou šanci dostat se do vyřazovací fáze.

Slávistická skupina je těžší. Dlouhému cestování na východ Kazachstánu se chtěli sešívaní vyhnout. Ale i kdyby z Astany měli přivézt jen bod, měli by být v silné pozici, aby se s kazašským týmem a Maccabi Tel Aviv poprali o druhé místo za Villarrealem.

Plzeň opět dostala FCSB a nepochybně bude chtít napravit chyby, které vedly ke kolapsu v druhém poločase předkola Ligy mistrů. Hapoel Beer-ševa se se Spartou nemohl měřit a Viktoria by měla být dostatečně kvalitní a zkušená na to, aby se popasovala s Luganem.

Pro Zlín znamená přítomnost Kodaně, Lokomotivu Moskva a Šeriffu Tiraspol a absence Arsenalu, Evertonu nebo Lazia ztracenou příležitost. Přesto kdo ví, co se může stát: vybojovat jednu či dvě výhry není mimo možnosti Zlína, stejně jako třetí místo ve skupině. Pokud se to klubu povede, bude jeho první účast v Evropě za posledních dvanáct let viděna jako úspěch.

Bude obrana nejlepším útokem?

Zpráva o tom, že Schickova budoucnost je vyřešena, měla být doprovázena nadšenou reakcí Karla Jarolíma a jeho realizačního týmu. Jenže neustále natahovaný transfer nechal Schicka mimo trávník a kvůli malé herní vytíženosti se nakonec nevešel do českého týmu pro klíčové kvalifikační zápasy o mistrovství světa proti Německu a Severnímu Irsku.

Schickova absence by sama o sobě neměla být zas tak velkou starostí. Koneckonců je do seniorského týmu zabudováván pomalu a doposud se dělil o zodpovědnost v útoku s Milanem Škodou a Michaelem Krmenčíkem. Ale protože Škoda také chybí kvůli nemoci a další čeští útočníci jsou těžce z formy, Jarolímovy ofenzivní možnosti jsou poměrně limitované.

Přestože na listině náhradníků zůstávali Schick, Šural i Vydra, Jarolím se rozhodl pro řadu záložníků a obránců, tudíž jedinými klasickými útočníky v týmu jsou Krmenčík a Jan Kliment z Bröndby.

Zhustit obranu a zálohu ve snaze získat bod dává smysl proti Německu. Ale pro klíčový zápas v Severním Irsku, kde Češi musejí vyhrát, rozhodnutí nepřivést třetího útočníka působí lehkomyslně.

Ale stejně tak má smysl si tu položit otázku: Koho povolat kromě Krmenčíka a Klimenta, který už má letos na svém kontě tři góly a čtyři asistence?

A VIEW FROM ENGLAND: Slavia reinforcements are still finding their feet. It's the long-term residents who excel so far

Slavia Prague’s goalless draw with APOEL last week ended their Champions League aspirations for this season. After trailing 2-0 from the first leg in Cyprus, the reigning Czech champions were always going to have a hard time overturning the deficit, despite having home advantage and the near 19,000 strong crowd roaring them on.

If things looked bleak, they got worse in the run up to kick-off. Milan Škoda, named in the starting line-up withdrew due to illness. Needing to win by three clear goals to progress, Slavia would have to fight the odds without their captain and leading goalscorer of the past three seasons.

In that moment of potential crisis, Jaroslav Šilhavý opted to put his faith in Mick van Buren and not the obvious stand-in for Škoda, Muris Mešanović. Come six o’clock on Saturday evening that choice had been justified.

Van Buren and Slavia failed to find a way past APOEL. But in the opening hour, the Dutchman vindicated his coach’s decision to start him. The former Esbjerg and Excelsior attacker had stretched, bullied and out ran the Cypriot defence, working himself into a number of good positions in the process. He may not have scored, but the signs were there that goals were forthcoming.

Against Mladá Boleslav, van Buren scored twice and put in a Man of the Match performance. For the second time in a week, his combination of directness, strength and intelligence off the ball caused his opponents problems.

His first goal was a deft header from a tight angle, his second an equally deft finish with his right foot. Both goals came not just as a result of van Buren’s smartness inside the penalty area, but also because of some fine play down the Slavia left. For the first time this season, the defending champions looked like a title-winning side.

Much has already been said (in both Czech and English) about Slavia’s ambition this year. Their high profile acquisitions have yet to impress, not consistently at least. But with Danny and Ruslan Rotan both growing into their respective roles with every passing game, they do look like they could click and embark on a devastating run of form.

Though, so far at least, it’s those who have been wearing Slavia’s red-and-white shirts for a while now are the ones who are impressing the most.

Alongside van Buren’s doggedness in leading the line, praise should also be shown to Josef Hušbauer and Jan Bořil who were equally as devastating against Mladá Boleslav and are arguably Slavia’s most in form players at the moment.

Hušbauer’s talents are well known to long-time followers of Czech football, though this season he appears to be offering in a deeper role than normal, and he appears to be revelling with the responsibility of being a creator-in-chief, rather than the box-to-box dynamo we’ve become accustomed to.

And then there’s Bořil, a man whose position in the side seems perennially under threat, yet time after time he has shrugged off the opposition and comes back stronger. David Limberský aside, it is hard to name a better left back in the Czech Republic right now.

However, there is a question that remains unanswered: Can they juggle their domestic ambitions with their aim of reaching the latter stages of the Europa League?

They have the squad depth to do so, but their start to the season, perhaps, hints that the road ahead might be a rocky one.

But, what has happened during Champions League qualification and the following fragmented displays against Baník Ostrava and Bohemians can be consigned to history. Their next three games will tell us a great deal about their ability to play that dreaded Thursday-Sunday cycle. After the international break, they travel down to Sigma Olomouc, who ran Plzeň close a fortnight ago, before welcoming Maccabi Tel Aviv and Sparta Prague to Eden.

Is it too early to label those three ties as being must win fixtures?

Slow start beginning to signal trouble for Sparta

There is a saying in motorsport that you cannot win a race at the first corner, only lose it. And after Saturday’s defeat to Zbrojovka Brno, people are beginning to wonder if Sparta’s title ambitions are all but over.

Yes, the league season is only five games old but whereas Slavia and league-leaders Viktoria Plzeň have ground out results and shown signs of progression, Sparta have remained at an impasse.

The loss to Brno should be taken in isolation, but with more rumblings in the press of comings and goings before the transfer deadline, it’s hard to see how stable they’ll be in the weeks leading up to the derby with Slavia. If results and performances don’t improve by the middle of September, the Letna club could be cut adrift.

Europa League: Favourable if not glamorous

All three Czech sides in the Europa League were handed relatively favourable opponents during the Group Stage draw in Monaco last Friday.

Both Viktoria Plzeň and Slavia Prague should be happy with their respective groups, as, despite the odd tricky fixture, they both should have a good chance of progressing to the knockout stages.

Slavia’s group is tougher. The long trip east to Kazakhstan will be one that they wanted to avoid. But if they can negotiate the away fixture with Astana with a point, they should find themselves in a strong position to jostle with the Kazakhs and Maccabi Tel-Aviv for second place behind Villarreal.

Plzeň have once again been paired with FCSB and they undoubtedly will want to right the wrongs of that second-leg collapse against the Romanians a few weeks ago in qualifying for the Champions League. Hapoel Beer-Sheva were no match for Sparta last season and Plzeň should have more than enough quality and experience to see off Lugano.

However, for Zlín, the presence of Copenhagen, Lokomotiv Moscow and Sheriff and the absence of an Arsenal, Everton or Lazio, represents the case of an opportunity lost. That said, who knows what could happen: picking up the odd victory isn’t beyond the realms of possibility and neither is finishing third. If they can manage that, their first foray into Europe in twelve years will be seen as a success.

Schick signs for Roma

By the time you read this, Patrick Schick will have been unveiled as Roma’s latest signing.

Schick will become the Giallorossi’s most expensive signing ever, with his rumoured €38m fee surpassing the €36m that the three-time Serie A champions paid for Gabriel Batistuta back in 2000. It has been a remarkable, near-enough meteoric rise for the forward who, let us not forget, was playing for Bohemians 1905 eighteen months ago.

Ever since last season ended, it was clear that Schick would be leaving Genoa for pastures new. However, the agreement between Roma and Sampdoria brings to an end a disruptive summer for the twenty-one year-old Czech striker, who was originally poised to join Juventus before the Turin-based club backed out a deal after re-examining some medical reports.

Will defence be the best form of attack?

The news that Schick’s future has been sorted out should be greeted with rapturous applause from Karel Jarolím and the rest of the national team coaching staff. However, the protracted nature of the transfer has left Schick on the sidelines and because of this lack of game time; he was omitted from the Czech Republic squad for the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Germany and Northern Ireland.

In isolation, Schick’s absence should not be too much of a worry. After all, he is being eased into the senior side and has shared attacking responsibilities with Milan Škoda and Michael Krmenčík so far in his fledgeling senior international career. But, with Škoda also missing (due to illness) and pretty much other Czech strikers distinctly out of form, Jarolím’s attacking options look rather limited.

Despite naming Schick, Josef Šural and Matěj Vydra on standby, Jarolím opted to call up a glut of midfielders and defenders on Monday morning, leaving Michael Krmenčík and Jan Kliment as the only recognised forwards in the squad.

Packing the defence and midfield in the bid to secure a point might make sense against Germany. But for a must-win game against Northern Ireland the decision not to add a third striker seems reckless.

Though it’s worth opening the question up here: Besides Krmenčík and Kliment, who has scored three and registered four assists already this season, who would you call upon?
