Competition programme
41 – Tocando Tierra con Eugenia León: Zapotec wind instrument orchestras in Sierra Juárez
Documentary programmes dedicated to music and dance
Traditional music is played with wind instruments as the sounds of clarinets, sax and tuba accompany every event of Mixes and Zapotecs. To know how these bands were formed, Mexican singer Eugenia León visits the school for indigenous people from San Bartolomé Zoogocho. Here, professor Ismael shows us the workshops that make up these centers of musical education, where children begin their training from the first grade onwards; when they reach the age of 12 they already have great expertise with their instruments. We will meet Esteban too, a musician born in Los Angeles, who found his calling as a very young man, when he arrived to Oaxaca. The joy and the pride of their traditions is the key to the musical preservation of this region.
