SKŘÍTEK
starring Eva Holubova and Bolek Polivka
Following one of the most popular Czech films of recent years, Out of the City, and its accompanying documentary Way Out of the City, Tomas Vorel is here with another full-length comedy, Skritek. The director returns to the genre of slapstick, explored in his short film A Trip to Karlstejn, from Prague Five, 1989.
A country family, encountered in the film Out of the City , moves to the better life of the city. The Father (Bolek Polivka) works as a butcher in a meatmarket. The Mother (Eva Holubova) is a cashier in a hypermarket.
Their Daughter (Anicka Marhoulova) goes to primary school, but technical subjects do not interest her. She’s the worse in the class and has constant problems with her Teacher (Tomas Hanak). The Son (Tomas Vorel Jr.) studies at a training institution for food professions since his father expects him to be a butcher as well. The son, however, is a vegetarian, an anarchist and heavy into marijuana. He has endless conflicts with his strict School Supervisor (Ivana Chylkova), his father, as well as the police (Jan Kraus, Petr Ctvrnicek, Tomas Vorel). All this is too much for the father, especially since he himself starts burning with lust for an attractive young female butcher (Marika Prochazkova). The mother tries everything to win her husband back : a new hairstyle, expensive lingerie, psychotherapy, but the husband completely loses interest in her and moves in with the young butcheress. With her whole world collapsing, the mother seeks revenge against the young butcheress. And if that‘s not enough, tangling all this up further is a Skritek with a magic stick that turns every serious situation into absurdity and humor. Only the daughter understands the Skritek’s magical, irrational world, just as, of course, only the Skritek understands her.
Like the silent films of old, the whole story unfolds entirely without words. The mystical music of MIG 21, sound effects, and exclamations replace language as we know it. The film is a rich cascade of gags, sketches and tragicomic situations, including the wild police chase and an unexpected ending. As Vorel dares to state: „In the film, there isn‘t a moment when the spectator isn’t laughing or crying.“ In its simplicity, its playfulness and pictorial telling, the film is understandable for every audience member in the world.
