Category 1: Music or dance programmes made for television
BERIO'S SEQUENZA VIII FOR VIOLIN SOLO

LGM, Francie
Coproducers: - - -

Reason: Impressive interpretation of the work; refined and imaginative direction (interaction between live performance and video elements) in spite of restricted means; stays modestly close to the music.

STUDENT PRIZE
WIRE FRAME

Amérimage-Spectra, Canada
Coproducers: - - -

Reason: After carefully observing all programs presented at this year’s Golden Prague Festival, the Student Jury, comprised of students from Czech Republic, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and Serbia and Montenegro made a joint and unanimous decision to award a televised version of choreography “Wire frame”, directed by Oana Suteu, produced by Amerimage-Spectra from Canada. “Wire frame” combined an excellent choreography, good performance, innovative direction and post-production with a careful and professional approach to creating an abstract, yet understandable story. Placed in a cold atmosphere of an architect studio, it tells a timeless story of sacrificing love for work, based on a medieval poem about a need to immure a live, loving creature into a tower foundation, in order of making it last forever. Movement of the dancers is driven by almost hypnotizing music, enhancing the story’s primordial and universal aspect.

PRIZE OF the Dagmar and Vaclav Havel Foundation “VISION 97”
MISTR JAN HUS, A SCENIC ORATORIO

Regionální Televizní Agentura, a.s., Czech Republic
Coproducers: - - -

Reason: The Dagmar and Vaclav Havel Foundation „Vision 97“ appreciated above all the fact that such an important theme as the legacy of Jan Hus has been executed by a private production company. In spite of a restricted budget, the programme is characterized by careful and thorough approach. The representatives of The Dagmar and Vaclav Havel Foundation „Vision 97“ would like to believe that awarding the prize to this programme will serve as an incentive for other private producers to create similar, non-commercial projects.

FESTIVAL DIRECTOR’S PRIZE
ALEXANDER ARKHANGELSKY "TO GOD I APPEAL"

GTRK Penza

Reason: The programme is inspiring in showing, on the background of particular live stories, the darker sides of the twentieth century Russian history.

CZECH CRYSTAL
Category 4:“Live“ recordings of concerts or performances (opera, operetta, ballet)
THE GRAND-DUCHESS OF GEROLSTEIN

François Roussillon et Associés, France
Coproducers: Théâtre du Châtelet; France 2; NHK; BBC

Reason: Remarkable caption of an outstanding stage performance: enjoyable, entertaining and of high quality. Well cast (especially Felicity Lott in the role of the Duchess); enjoyable stage direction: high tempo, alive and dynamic, showing humour and irony, constantly keeping the whole stage in tension;

Superb TV-direction which captures all details without overruling the original performance. Flawless camera work . Well designed opening and main titles.

Category 3: Documentary programmes with a musical or dance theme
FROM SHTETL TO SWING

ARTE France, France
Coproducers: ARTLINE Films; LOBSTER Films; Thirteen/WNET New York; WETA Washington, D.C.

Reason: Imaginative use of impressive and rich footage material, perfectly researched and wonderfully edited; entertaining, meaningful and of historical relevance.

Category 2: Music or dance programmes adapted for television
NO AWARD IN THIS CATEGORY

Statement of the Jury: Although the percentage of interesting and exciting programmes in this category was above average (compared to the other categories) the jury found none of them outstanding enough for a Czech Crystal, but wanted to give two of them a special mention

Category 1: Music or dance programmes made for television
BLACK WIDOW

Enigmatico Films Inc., Canada
Coproducers: Holland Park Productions

Reason: An intriguing, suspenseful and enjoyable film with good taste and refinement; well performed acting and singing; imaginative way of quoting "Philip-Marlowe- B-film-style" and creating a story based on songs ("song-story-based story")

MOUNTAIN AIR

Egmond Film & Television, The Netherlands
Coproducers: NPS (Nederlandse Programma Stichting)

Reason: A highly original music and dance story with reference to Thomas Mann, presented on a very high level of TV creation and in a ballet language which moves easily from tragedy to grotesque and burlesque. Remarkably imaginative use of music.

Grand Prix GOLDEN PRAGUE
BURNT TOAST

Rhombus Media Inc., Canada
Coproducers: Marblemedia

Reason: An original new "opera buffa" brilliantly turned into a sequence of episodes. It works as a complete film, structured by funny "interludes". It could also be shown as individual "vignettes".

A film of very high standards in direction, production and story-telling. Attention is paid to the smallest details - from the animated main titles to the musical background of the end credits.

This programme turns contemporary music into a most amusing, humorous and comic TV-show with prime-time qualities.
