STUDENT PRIZE

HERCULES
BEL AIR MEDIA, France
Co-producer: OPERA DE PARIS, NEF

The Student Jury Statement: Although we didn't choose the following two programmes as our winner we still want to mention them. "Embracing Time" is a programme which created an enchanting and dreamlike atmosphere by finding visual correspondences to Mahler´s songs. Moreover we appreciated the special idea of this screen dance fantasy. Also we liked the intimate portrayal of Maria Jo?o Pires in the documentary "Discovering sound". We had the feeling that this documentary provided a deep insight into her thoughts towards music and life. We awarded this year'student prize to "Hercules" because of the visually and emotionally stunning qualities of this programme. "Hercules" proved to be even more than a live recording of a baroque opera. It is an audivisual masterpiece which achieved to unite the finest of all arts involved and turned out to be an unique artwork.
Besides a phantastical performance and phantastic opera singing, we really appreciated the fact that the cast - including the choir - managed to put us right to the emotional center of the opera through its expressive acting which has been perfectly captured by the television cameras. Every image had visual power almost like a painting would provide it. The adaptation of the stage lighting led to a perceptible feeling of space and provided the perfect basis of truly filmic images.
The editing not only let the spectator perfectly understand the stage director´s approach to narration but created a truly cinematic way of telling a story. We felt that it perfectly fit to the music and even intensified the atmosphere of the stage production.
We really were stunned by recognizing that we felt no need to see this piece in theater anymore because the TV direction went even one step further than "just" recording an impressive stage performance. The moving pictures make a piece of true television art of it.
