F. A. Brabec graduated from FAMU (Film Academy of Performing Arts), majoring in cinematography. During his studies he worked on several professional short documentaries and was awarded at the film festival in Oberhausen.

As a director and cinematographer, Brabec has worked on many full-length films for which he received prestigious awards. He was a cinematographer on Jan Svěrák's student film "Goodbye, the Little Station" (Sbohem, nádražíčko), and debuted as lead cinematographer with Irena Pavlásková's film "Time of the Servants" (Čas sluh ). Later Brabec cooperated with her on the film "Corpus Delicti." He worked again with Jan Sverák on the film "The Elementary School" (Obecná škola), which was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 1992 and received the Cinematography Award at 1992 Bellinzone film festival in Smaczneg. His camera in Sverák "The Ride" (Jízda) won the Czech Lion 1994, and the film itself won the Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 1995. In 1996 Brabec was awarded another Czech Lion for the film "King Ubu" (Král Ubu), which he also directed. He filmed an outstanding adaptation of a work of classic literature titled "Wild Flowers" (Kytice), presenting six ballads from the collection of poems written by Karel Jaromír Erben. The film was awarded the Czech Lion for the Best Cinematography in 2000.

Brabec works on the realization of advertisements and has filmed around 150 spots, 50 as a director and cinematographer. In both fields he has received prestigious awards, like his 1998 work for Tatra Pack which won the Zlatý Klinec award in the Slovak Republic for the best advertisement.

He has also made dozens of music videos for artists such as: Karel Gott, Lucie Bílá, Dan Hůlka, Jaromír Nohavica, Ilona Csáková, Daniel Landa, Iveta Bartošová, Petr Muk and many others. His video "Ave Maria" for Lucie Bílá was awarded the Czech Grammy in 1996 for Best Video.
